First trimester

Week 1 of pregnancy

Pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last period, so in week 1 there is no baby yet. Your body is getting ready.

Your baby this week

  • There is no baby yet: week 1 is the week of your period.
  • Doctors count the 40 weeks from the first day of your last period, because the day of conception is rarely known exactly.
  • In your ovaries a few eggs have started to ripen; usually only one will be released.

Your body this week

  • Your womb is shedding last month’s lining and starting to build a new one.
  • You may have your usual period symptoms: cramps, tiredness or mood changes.
  • If you are planning a pregnancy, folic acid (400 micrograms a day) helps the baby’s brain and spine develop from the very first weeks.
