First trimester

Week 2 of pregnancy

Towards the end of this week you ovulate: a ripe egg is released and can meet a sperm.

Your baby this week

  • There is still no baby, but the egg that could become your baby is ripening.
  • Around day 14 of a 28-day cycle the egg is released into the fallopian tube.
  • The egg lives for about 12 to 24 hours, while sperm can live for up to five days.

Your body this week

  • The lining of your womb thickens under the influence of oestrogen.
  • Around ovulation, vaginal discharge becomes clearer and stretchier, like raw egg white.
  • Some women feel a mild ache on one side of the tummy as the egg is released.
